Human Skull Photos

Human skulls and bones
The Catacombs of Paris is the final resting place for the human remains of approximately 6 million Parisian skeletons. At the end of the 18th century, the old cemetery had become the origin of infection for all the inhabitants of the district. After many complaints, the bones were removed and the cemetery evacuated.
Old quarries were selected to deposit the bones and they form a labrynth of underground passageways beneath the streets of Paris. This underground world is huge but only part of it is open to the public. This small part takes about 40 mintues to walk through. The bones are arranged very tidily in layers with skullls breaking up the monotony of the design. There are no individual graves just long walkways lined with layers of bones – creepy! Take a torch if you go, and maybe a tripod as the lighting level is low in the Catacombs and flash photography is not allowed. You can use your torch to highlight areas you want a photo of.

Make sure you are not tempted to pocket one of the bones or stick a skull in your backpack before leaving as there is a guard on the exit door who checks everyone – yes, some people really do try to take home a skull to put on the mantelpiece! The catacombs are next to Denfert Rochereau subway, 1, Avenue de Colonel Henri Rol-Tanguy.
